Software Review Columns - Netting a Catch Multimedia compilers
Computing can be pretty dull, unless you choose to spruce it up with the help of multimedia compilers, a selection of which we look at this week. Most of the programs are shareware. MASH - Microsoft Agent Scripting Helper MASH allows you to bring your desktop and presentations to life with Microsoft Agent animated, talking characters. You can easily compose and playback custom Microsoft Agent scripts by simply selecting the options, characters, styles, etc., from the interface. Unlike many other MS Agent based tools, Mash also allows you to let the character speak something and show something else in the balloon. It allows you to properly pronounce words while displaying the correct spelling in the balloon. Using the software, you can launch programs, documents, and more with your voice or save your presentations as standalone .exe file, PowerPoint, e-mail stationery, HTML Scripts, WScript, Visual Basic, and VBA.

You can add a custom sound track or pick from over 170 transition effects, add sound effects, text captions, create video CDs and more. You can also create autorun CDs for computer playback or TV, self-contained executable slide shows in .exe format, and even build Windows screensavers from your pictures.

TwinPlayer allows the average computer user to produce and distribute online or offline interactive multimedia presentations without requiring any programming skills. It allows you to assemble pictures, videos, sounds, texts, animations by filling in a grid style interface and place the objects on a timeline. You can optionally choose to view the layout in a storyboard, which displays thumbnails of the multimedia objects rather than the (more technical) grid view.

ClipFactory allows you to capture content off your desktop and compile it into a slideshow presentation with optional MP3 background music. The program provides an easy to use recording component with a viewfinder that can be dragged anywhere on your desktop. The compiled presentation can be saved as a .mio file and used online or offline. In order to view the .mio files, a viewer must be installed, unless the program is present on the machine.
