TN to operate private buses

CHENNAI, Nov. 28

THE Tamil Nadu Government has decided to operate private buses throughout the State in a phased manner. It has decided to allow private buses to operate in the routes permitted by the Government transport corporations, similar to what is in force in the Nilgiris district, according to an official press release.

The Government has also announced a hike in bus fares, and an increase in motor vehicle tax for certain categories of vehicles to raise additional resources, all to be effective December 1.

The fare revision and the additional resources mobilisation are being done in view of the poor financial health of the State transport corporations and also because of the tight financial position in the State, according to the release. Following the revision, the fares in metropolitan and other cities will be Rs 2 at the first stage and Rs 10 at the last stage. The following are the revised fares per km with the old fares in brackets : mofussil (ordinary category) -- 30 paise (22 paise); ghat section - 37 paise (23 paise); semi-deluxe express - 36 paise (25 paise); super deluxe express - 42 paise (30 paise); ghat section semi-deluxe express - 42 paise (30 paise); ghat section super deluxe - 47 paise (35 paise).

The five-year tax for ordinary taxi has been increased to Rs 4,000 from Rs 3,500; that for tourist taxi to Rs 6,500 from Rs 5,000. The quarterly tax for 12-seater maxi cab has been increased to Rs 250 from Rs 175; that for 55-seater private service vehicle to Rs 100 from Rs 75. The quarterly tax meant for 35-seater omni bus increased to Rs 3,000 from Rs 2,000.

As far as lorries are concerned, on laden weight basis, the quarterly tax payable has been revised for different categories as follows : for lorries up to 3000 kg - Rs 600 (Rs 545); 3001- 5500 kg - Rs 950 (Rs 885); 5501-9000 kg - Rs 1500 (Rs 1355); 9001-12,000 kg - Rs 1900 (Rs 1755); 12,001-13,000 kg - Rs 2100 (Rs 1930); 13,001-15000 kg - Rs 2,500 (Rs 2,300); and above 15,000 kg - Rs 2,500 plus Rs 100 for every 250 kg (Rs 2,300 plus Rs 50 for every 250 kg).

The life time tax for two-wheelers has been fixed in the following manner : below 50 cc - Rs 1,000; 51-75 cc - Rs 1300; 76-170 cc - Rs 2200; above 170 cc - Rs 2,500.
