TRAI begins tariff review

NEW DELHI, Oct. 18

THE Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) has begun its review of telecom tariffs with a meeting of experts today.

The two-day meeting will discuss various issues such as the basis for deciding the services whose tariffs should be regulated, the methodology of tariff regulation and to identify the types of tariff policy that will help achieve the objectives of increa sing teledensity and more competitive environment in various telecom services.

Various policy issues will be addressed in the context of the ongoing changes in various telecom markets including the national long distance and international long distance services as well as in the linked policy areas such as universal service obligat ions and access charge regime.

The meeting also seeks to elicit views and inputs on specific principles relating to the regulation of individual telecom services such as basic cellular, Internet and leased circuits. It is envisaged to provide inputs to the regulator on both principle s and methodological aspects of policy-making.
