Banking and Finance
Bank merger mantra
`In merger lies the salvation' (Business Line, Sept 11) is thought-provoking. Notwithstanding the bad experience of the merger of New Bank of India with Punjab National Bank few years ago, the article consistently and correctly advocated the merger of PS U bank as a solution to combat competitiveness from growing private sector banks.

Economy
Kick-start the economy
This refers to the reports regarding convening a series of meetings by the Prime Minister to kick-start the economy. These are encouraging signs of the Government's seriousness, though belated, of providing a stimulus to the economy which is showing tren ds of slowdown.

Politics
Irony, indeed
The world is in the grip of an ugly shock over the collapse of the twin towers of the World Trade Centre, New York, and the Pentagon, Washington. Terrorism seems to be taking over the lives of innocents the world over, and it is an irony, indeed, conside red the infallible leader -- till September 11, perhaps -- has become the victim.
