TN police machinery
N. S. Venkataraman, e-mail
In the last three-to-four months, the image of the official machinery in Tamil Nadu has taken a severe beating, due to the manner in which the IAS and IPS officers have allowed themselves to be treated by politicians.
Immediately after coming to power, the new State Government transferred a large number of IAS and IPS officers, and many of them were kept on compulsory hold, without any administrative justification.
It is sad that there have been no worthwhile protests from the IAS and IPS cadre. While the politicians, with their partisan and corrupt methods are wrecking havoc to the fibre and fabric of the administrative structure of the Government, the IAS and IP
S officers have become political tools.
The worst damage is the serious erosion in the faith of the common men about the fairness, quality and commitment of the police forces at all levels.
In a democratic society, police maintain law and order in the public predominantly by moral authority sanctioned by law. When such moral authority is lost, the state can become ungovernable.
