Norms followed in UTI chief's appointment: Sinha
Our Bureau
NEW DELHI, Aug. 16
THE Finance Minister, Mr Yashwant Sinha, on Thursday maintained that all procedural requirements were adhered to for appointing Mr P.S. Subramanyam as Chairman of the Unit Trust of India (UTI).
Mr Sinha was reacting to allegations made by the Oppositions that top-level appointments were being influenced by the NDA allies.
Raising the issue during Zero Hour, Mr P.R. Dasmunshi (Congress), said that the NDC convenor, Mr George Fernandes' observation that Mr Subramanyam's appointment had been made at the behest of the AIADMK Chief, Ms Jayalalithaa, was a reflection on the Gov
ernment's functioning.
Mr Dasmunshi demanded that the Prime Minister, Mr Atal Bihari Vaypayee, make a clarification in the House. He said that there was an established procedure for such appointments through the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC).
The AIADMK member, Mr P.H. Pandian, categorically denied that Ms Jayalalithaa had ever recommended Mr Subramanyam's appointment.
