`Govt to modernise patent offices'

NEW DELHI, July 25

THE Government proposes to halve the processing time for clearing patent applications by modernising patent offices in the country, the Union Commerce and Industry Minister, Mr Murasoli Maran, has said.

Inaugurating a modernised patent office here on Wednesday, Mr Maran said similar initiatives for modernising patents offices in Chennai, Kolkata and Mumbai have already been taken up.

A new identity has been created for the intellectual property offices with a new logo that graphically represents the growing importance of these offices.

Mr Maran said comprehensive computerisation, according to an information technology strategy plan, is under way and a dedicated application software is being developed.

The patent granting procedure is also being re-engineered to make it compatible with computerised environment and more user-friendly along with simplification of procedures.
