CTCs in demand at Guwahati auction

GUWAHATI, April 30
THE CTC offerings at Guwahati met with good demand at the tea auction last week which slackened with the progress of the sale. Good liquoring sorts saw competition around last levels with an easier tendency. Better medium varieties witnessed an easier te
ndency while plainer and medium sorts met with better enquiry at lower levels.
Cachars on offer also met with better enquiry but at lower levels. Few good varieties were irregular around last while plainer and medium sorts were generally easier.
The western India buyers were selective for liquoring lines on offer with better enquiry from other internal buyers particularly for plainer and medium varieties. The major blender was more active while other packeteers remained out of the market. Some e
nquiry for larger brokens and fannings on offer was forthcoming from exporters.
Demand for dust was less compared to leaf. Selected few good liquoring varieties were irregular around last with an easier tendency. Better medium and medium sorts on offer witnessed an easier tendency, while the plainer categories were easier and saw wi
thdrawals. The major blender was selective though buying with better strength, compared to previous week. The other packeteers remained out of the market. Western India operated for better liquoring varieties while internal markets were selective.
Estimated crop figures released by the Tea Board indicate that North India crop up to February, 2001 was down by 1.1 mkg at 7.7 mkg as against 8.8 mkg last year. South India crop up to February, 2001 was ahead by 0.4 mkg at 29.3 mkg as against 28.9 mkg.
Crop of other countries from January, 2001 up to February, 2001 are as follows: with figures in brackets for the years 2000 and 1999) Sri Lanka - 53.6 mkg (44.2 mkg, 47.8 mkg), Kenya - 57.1 mkg (42.0 mkg, 36.3 mkg), Malawi - 11.3 mkg (11.8 mkg, 11.5 mkg)
, Bangladesh - 0.4 mkg (0.4 mkg, 0.6 mkg).
