`Railways must seek more budgetary support'

MADURAI: In a pre-Budget memorandum submitted to the Minister for Railways, Ms Mamata Banerjee, recently, the Tamil Nadu Chamber of Commerce and Industry here has suggested that railways should seek more budgetary support instead of hiking passenger and freight rates.

Mr S. Rethinavelu, President, in a press statement said the memorandum, among others, included laying of double line between Madurai and Chennai to cope up with the increasing passenger and goods traffic. The Chamber has further demanded that Southern pa rt of the State should get the benefits of the prestigious Konkan project; direct express train between Madurai and New Delhi; allotment of funds for vital gauge conversion projects in the region; and reintroduction of Madurai-Coimbatore intercity expres s, he added. -- Our Correspondent
