Handicrafts export up 17% in 9 months

NEW DELHI, Jan. 22
HANDICRAFTS exports from the country have touched Rs 5,473 crore during April-December 2000, reflecting a 17.22 per cent increase to the level of Rs 4,669 crore recorded in the same period during the previous year.
According to the Export Promotion Council for Handicrafts (EPCH), the target set for handicrafts exports (other than carpets) for the year 2000-01 stood at Rs 6,950 crore in rupee terms and $1.66 billion in dollar terms.
Exports of zari and zari goods registered an increase of about 93 per cent to touch a level of Rs 116 crore (Rs 60 crore). Exports of embroidered and crocheted goods increased from Rs 1,240 crore to Rs 1,564 crores.
Art metal ware exports registered an increase of 18.13 per cent to touch Rs 1,531 crore (Rs 1,296 crore). Exports of hand-printed textiles and scarves for the period under review stood at Rs 1,086 crore (Rs 979 crore).
Export of wood wares touched a level of Rs 248 crore (Rs 202 crore).
