Economy
Subsidies
It is a pleasant surprise to see that the Finance Ministry is standing up to the ``blackmail'' of the Petroleum Ministry; this was a foregone conclusion once the oil prices went up and the latter was forced to go to the former to demand a subsidy.

Infrastructure
Construction industry
The article, `Construction contractors' woes' (Business Line November 7), details typical scenarios in the construction industry, worldwide.

States
Tribal community
The article, `Gender empowerment', (Business Line November 8) was interesting. It is good augury that the NGO set up by the Finance Minister, Mr Yashwant Sinha, at Hazaribagh, has started yielding results for the benefit of the local tribal populace.
