Shipping/Ports Government - Policy States - Andhra Pradesh AP all set to form State Maritime Board The Government of India has made it mandatory for all States to constitute maritime boards so as to get eligibility for financial assistances for port infrastructure. Our Bureau Hyderabad, Dec 27 Andhra Pradesh is all set to form a State Maritime Board, with the Government introducing a draft bill on the proposal in the recent Assembly session. The non-major ports in the State, which handle about 50 million tonnes of cargo, aims at touching a throughput of 170 million tonnes by 2020 through creation of new ports and expansion of the existing facility. The formation of the maritime board is expected to play a significant role in achieving this target. “The waterfront in the State offers tremendous scope for development of minor ports, which besides stimulating the export-oriented industries can also generate employment,” a senior State Government official said. The board, likely to be headed by the Chief Minister as Ex-Officio Chairman, will be taking up several projects such as construction of wharves and quays. It will also have the power to undertake services such as stevedoring, according to the draft bill. The Government of India has made it mandatory for all States to constitute maritime boards so as to get eligibility for financial assistances for port infrastructure. This also forms part of the National Maritime Development policy, which has proposed to create 520 million tonnes of additional cargo handling capacity.
