Chennai, Dec. 11

Atmel Corporation, a US-based designer and manufacturer of microcontrollers and touch screens, has formally launched its R&D facility here.

Addressing a press conference here, Mr Vegard Wollan, Vice President – Microcontroller Business Unit, Atmel Corporation, said the facility is one of the 12 such facilities Atmel has globally. The 100-member R&D team is the third largest among its dozen R&D units and will be expanded by about 80 next year.

Microcontrollers – miniature, self-contained computer-like units that are behind the working of handheld electronic devices and electrical and electronic goods – and touch-screens account for about 60 per cent of the company's $1.7-billion revenue.

The research team here works on integrated circuit development and software-oriented application engineering.

Atmel is among the largest and fast growing microcontroller suppliers, which is now the second largest supplier of 8-bit microcontrollers and the fastest growing supplier of 32-bit microcontrollers. It is also among the world leaders in touch-screen technology with its products used in mobile phones, tablet computers and netbooks, media players, white goods appliances and automobiles.

Its touch-screens, maXTouch, go into a range of smart phones and new applications and operating systems are incorporating touch technology. This is an emerging field that Atmel is well poised to exploit, he said.
