NTPC mulls coal supply by barges

Farakka and Kahalgaon plants of NTPC will soon need substantially more coal due to additions to generation capacity. Considering the constraints facing the railways, the public sector power giant is mulling transportation of coal, both domestic and imported, by barges from Haldia to Farakka and beyond. Accordingly, Inland Waterways Authority of India (IWAI) was asked to prepare a report some time ago. IWAI, working with IL&FS, has got the report ready. It is also trying to seek the help of the Dutch Government under the India-Netherlands Government programmes. Recently a Dutch team visited Haldia and held a workshop in Kolkata. The was participation from several agencies including the port authorities, barge-owners, NTPC, SAIL, MMTC and Coal India Limited. Inquiries reveal that the Dutch team is working on the terms of reference of the project report to be prepared in this regard. The terms of reference will include, among others, the assessment of lowest available draft in the river and the identification of the right type of vessels.
