Letters Nehru’s legacy The singular merit of Mr Jaswant Singh’s book Jinnah India-Partition Independence is that it opens up a much needed re-appraisal of the role of Jawaharlal Nehru in the Partition of India. If Mr Singh’s views are prejudiced, motivated or even factually erroneous, they will fall by the wayside. A mature nation like India should not be disinclined to consider any critical evaluation of the role of personalities who influenced the fate of the nation, instead of nurturing blind and uncritical adoration for them. Let us remind ourselves that it was blind faith in Nehruvian economic policies over three decades that was largely responsible for the economic crisis of 1990s. But for the political courage of Narasimha Rao, ably supported by Dr Manmohan Singh, India would not have come out of the rut and taken the path of economic rejuvenation. P. V.
