Mumbai, Aug. 12

Taking into account the impressive growth in the premium handset market, Samsung on Wednesday launched Omnia HD and Omnia Pro to consolidate its leadership position.

The Omnia HD is priced at Rs 33,900 and aimed at the high-end market, which is expected to increase by 50 per cent to 1.2 million handsets by the end of this year.

The company expects to control around 50 per cent of the market with its portfolio of nine touchphone models. Some of the phones from other companies that will compete with Omnia are Apple's Iphone, which retails around Rs 30,000, and HTC's touch-phone series Magic and Touch Diamond, which retail around Rs 29,000 and Rs 27,500 respectively.

Nokia, the market leader in the Indian cellphone market, continues to be absent from the touch-screen segment.

Samsung plans to release 13 more models by the end of this year which would span various price segments. - Our Bureau
