Tea Coonoor tea sales witness mixed trend P.S. Sundar
Coonoor , Oct. 2 Prices rose for some invoices but remained flat for others at the auctions of the Coonoor Tea Trade Association here this weekend, as the demand was selective. While brighter liquoring and quality teas fetched higher prices, the medium and plainer ones had difficulty to get higher bids.
Uneven rise
Consequently, although the volume of 9.65 lakh kg was the lowest for the third consecutive week, the price rise was not evenly felt on all invoices.
HLL choice
"Brighter liquoring dust grades got good demand from upcountry buyers. They fetched handsome premiums. But the smaller grades were irregular. They lost around Rs 2 a kg over the previous week. Fanning leaf grades sold for Rs 3 a kg more. But, medium and better medium leaf grades just managed to fetch last week's levels," an auctioneer told Business Line. Among the corporate buyers, Hindustan Lever Ltd selected the better medium grades. Among the exporters, CIS buyers picked up medium and plainer sorts paying around Rs 49 a kg. Pakistan bought only well made fannings paying around Rs 53 a kg. Kenyan purchases were limited. Internal buyers did not show much interest for the dust grades, but they purchased leaf grades.
