Puts Ace on top gear

Our Bureau

Pune , July 11

Tata Motors is pressing on the gas pedal to take its successful one-tonne mini truck, the Ace, ahead in the race even as competitors including Mahindra & Mahindra, Piaggio India, Ashok Leyland and Force Motors are gearing up to foray into the segment.

Company sources told Business Line that work has started on its green-field facility at Pantnagar in Uttaranchal where it plans to start production of Ace by March 2007.

A team of senior officers at the Pune facility has been put in charge of steering the project where it has planned capacities of 750 units/day, sources said.

"Key vendors have already acquired land to set up their facilities at the vendor park within the company's land," sources said.

The company has, meanwhile, upped production of Ace at its Pune facility beginning mid-June to 200 units per day to double the capacity to 60,000 units, a company spokesperson told Business Line when contacted.

Top company sources told this newspaper production is tipped to further rise to the level of 400 units/day by October, even as the company grapples with the demand in the market.

To leverage

The company is, meanwhile, working on leveraging the success of the model by extending it into other segments with sources insisting that work is well underway for a soft-top, passenger-carrier version of the Ace.

The company spokesperson, however, said the company does not comment on its future product launches. Sources said with the company running short of space at its Pune facility, it is keen to get the Uttaranchal plant going on priority.
