The largest number of overseas students in the US last year came from India, according to Mr Michael Owen, US Consul-General.
Speaking to newspersons, he said that 81,000 Indian students went to the US last year while China, which ranked second, sent 64,000 students.
The number from India has been growing considerably and the US Consulate for western India alone has targeted some 12,000 student visa applicants this year.
Mr Joseph Pomper, Consular Section Chief, US Consulate, said that India has ranked number one for the past four consecutive years and the Consulate is working hard to make sure that the maximum number of students receive their visas on time this year as well.
Dismissing rumours that certain States or last names get special considerations for getting student visas, Mr Pomper said that visas would be issued only to bona fide students based on their intention and ability to fund their studies.
The Consulate has also extended the number of days - to 120 from 90 - for receiving student visa prior to the commencement of classes.
