New Projects BPCL board okays Kochi Refineries expansion G K Nair
Kochi , May 10 The capacity expansion-cum-modernisation project phase II of Kochi Refineries Ltd (KRL) at an estimated cost of Rs 2,591.8 crore has been approved by the BPCL board. The project, which was approved earlier by the KRL board, envisages increasing the company's refining capacity from the present 7.5 million tonnes per annum to 9.5 MTPA. The mechanical completion of the project facilities is scheduled for September 2009, the KRL sources told Business Line. After completion of the project, the entire auto fuels MS and HSD from KRL will meet the Euro-III norm, which will be in force throughout the country from April 1, 2010, they said. The project facilities essentially consist of a VGO-HDS unit, Continuous Catalytic Regeneration Reformer unit, revamp of existing crude unit II and a Sulphur Recovery unit. The Sulphur Recovery unit will help to reduce atmospheric pollution. The project facilities also include effluent treatment plant for treating the wastewater generated during the process to meet the latest environmental guidelines. The project facilities are proposed to be put up in the existing refinery area, they said.

Meanwhile, construction of the Single Point Mooring facility at nearby Puthuvypeen is underway and is scheduled for commissioning in May 2007. Setting up of this Rs 623-crore facility well before the completion of the expansion and modernisation project has become inevitable for the refinery to reduce the cost on transportation of crude, the sources said.
