BBC to telecast reality series on call centres

KARTHIK Ranganath, a 22-year-old electronics engineer, from Bangalore is all smiles. "After facing the camera for so many days, I'm now comfortable with it," he says.

The life of Karthik, an employee of the Bangalore-based BPO firm 24x7 Customer, has been filmed and will be telecast in a BBC reality series starting February 12.

The seven-part series captures the daily routine of call centre employees through Karthik Ranganath and Shalini Kalra, a 27-year-old manager at 24x7.

The team at Miditech Pvt Ltd, which produced the film, took two years to compete the film, "mainly because we wanted to project the right kind of person and Karthik fitted the bill perfectly," says Ms Manira A. Pinto, Vice-President (South), Miditech Pvt Ltd.

The camera has captured Karthik from the time he started for the interview till took his first call at 24x7: going through the group discussion, various rounds of interviews, accepting the offer letter, breaking the news to his family, to his voice and accent training, technical training, and how he copes with a whole new world.

The camera also gives viewers a peek into Ms Kalra's life and her role in the call centre and how she helps her team of 120 people cope with crises like hurricanes in the US.

Mr Niret Alva, President of Miditech, says that he was fascinated by the life of these young people and he wanted to be sure that the film would give people a feel of how this industry operates.

"And that's why we opted for the observational reality format."

Mr Alva has earlier produced and directed other reality series such as Hospital, Commando. Wheels, Ad World, The Earth Report, Indian Idol 1 and Indian Idol 2 are his other popular ventures.
