Kochi , Jan. 25 THE total revenue from the just concluded Sabarimala pilgrimage season recorded an increase of about Rs 8 crore to Rs 69.33 crore, from Rs 61 crore in the previous season. The revenue comes from cash offerings made by devotees and sales of the prasadam - appam and aravana. During the Makaravilakku season, from December 30, 2005 to January 19, 2006, the receipts stood at Rs 24.40 crore, while that of the Mandala period from November 17 to December 26 was Rs 44.93 crore, Mr G. Raman Nair, President, Travancore Devaswom Board, which controls and administers the temple, told Business Line. He said Rs 25.5 crore came from the sale of appam and aravana alone. The outgo towards expenses during the pilgrimage season would come to around Rs 25 crore. Though the Travancore Devaswom Board has around 1,200 temples under its administrative control, only 85 are self-sustaining. The total revenue from all the temples would come to around Rs 100 crore. The expenditure towards salaries and wages of the total 4,500 employees of the Travancore Devaswom Board is estimated at around Rs 35 crore a year. In addition, 20 per cent of the income goes towards administrative expenses, said Mr Nair. The surplus amount from Sabarimala and other revenue receipts from the Travancore Devaswom Board's investments elsewhere, including rentals, are used for the temple's developmental activities such as renovation and maintenance of the buildings, ponds. In addition, new projects are also taken up, he said.
