TN govt to build land bank to meet demand from industries

Chennai , Jan. 11

THE Tamil Nadu Government estimates that it will require at least 7,000 acres of land for industrial use in 2006-07 and plans to build a sufficient land bank.

The State Industries Promotion Corporation of Tamil Nadu (SIPCOT), the State Government agency that is responsible for developing industrial parks and estates, has started the process of acquiring land in Oragadam, Sriperumbudur and Siruseri — three areas on the city's outskirts where there is demand for land from industries.

While Oragadam and Sriperumbudur are major manufacturing centres, Siruseri is along the Old Mahabalipuram Road, known as the IT corridor, where SIPCOT has developed an IT park. According to reliable sources, the plans include acquiring about 2,000 acres in Krishnagiri while the Government is hopeful of getting companies to set up plants at the Ennore special economic zone, where it has about 3,500 acres.

The Government is actively following up with a number of major automobile manufacturers, including General Motors, for greenfield as well as expansion plans. It is also in talks with some leather and plastic component manufacturers, especially those supplying to major sports goods manufacturers such as Nike and Adidas. It has held discussions with one such manufacturer from China.
