The Hindu Business Line : NHAI plans Rs 1,260-cr four-laning of TN highway

THE National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) plans to four-lane the Tindivanam-Tiruchi section on NH 45 in Tamil Nadu on a BOT basis at a cost of around Rs 1,260 crore. It has invited applications from companies for pre-qualification under international competitive bidding.

The BOT operators will take care of the design, engineering, construction, development, finance, operation, and maintenance of the Tindivanam-Tiruchi section for a specified concession period.

The entire project stretch has been divided into three separate stretches - Tindivanam to Ulundurpet, Ulundurpet to Padalur, and Padalur to Tiruchi, according to information available on the NHAI Web site.

The project will be the second phase of strengthening NH-45, which connects Chennai with Dindigul in south Tamil Nadu.

The first was strengthening and widening the 93-km road stretch between Tambaram and Tindivanam at a cost of over Rs 300 crore on a BOT basis.

The Government of India has received a credit/loan from International Bank for Reconstruction and Development (IBRD)/International Development Association (IDA) towards the cost of Grand Trunk Road improvement projects and applies part of the proceed of this credit/loan to payment for Public Private Partnership (PPP) in road concession, according to information available on the NHAI Web site.

Some of the other major projects to be undertaken by NHAI in the State include a 47.2-km stretch between Tuticorin and Tirunelveli, as part of port connectivity projects, on NH-7A at a cost of Rs 1,380 crore - which will be undertaken by a special purpose vehicle - and a 30.6-km stretch between Kanyakumari and Panagudi on NH-7 at a cost of Rs 1,200 crore (NHAI will undertake this project), the Web site adds.
