SSI plea to revise Nilakkottai food estate land price

Our Correspondent

Madurai , July 5

THE Madurai District Tiny and Small Scale Industries Association (Maditssia), in a resolution passed at its 31st general body meeting held here, has appealed to the State Government to reconsider the exorbitant land price fixed for the food processing industrial estate at Nilakkottai in Dindigul district.

The association has drawn the attention of the State on the Small Industries Development Corporation's (Sidco) refusal to execute any sale deed for plots over and above 5,000 sq ft, which has been in practice for many years.

Sidco charging Rs 20,000 per acre for non-utilisation of plots is contrary to the earlier practice of charging only Rs 3,000 per acre and the move would drive away new entrepreneurs, it pointed out.

The association, in another resolution, citing the bad maintenance of basic infrastructure at various industrial estates, urged the State to award deemed local body status to the industrial estates so that they will be in a position to take care of their needs without troubling the SIDCO or the local body.

The association has appealed to the Tamil Nadu Electricity Board to offer economical power to small-scale industries.

Establishment of a windmill park by the Government exclusively for the Sidco Industrial Estates would encourage new entrepreneurs to start units here.

The association urged the State to implement value added tax (VAT) immediately to avoid migration of industries/business to neighbouring States, develop Madurai as the second best option to establish an information technology park, withdraw entry tax on all plastic raw materials, amend the Weights and Measures Act, exempt from excise duty the agro-based food products, siddha, ayurvedic and generic medicines etc.

Further, flaying the Centre for passing the Small and Medium Enterprises Development Bill 2005, the association has sought its immediate withdrawal and bring an exclusive Bill that could benefit small and tiny industries.
