Table Employment Guarantee Bill in monsoon session: Left

Our Bureau

New Delhi , July 2

THE Left parties that are providing outside support to the United Progressive Alliance (UPA) Government have demanded that the Employment Guarantee Bill be tabled in the coming monsoon session of the Parliament.

Addressing a function to mark the culmination of a 50-day yatra organised by People's Action for Employment Guarantee, an umbrella organisation of social activist groups demanding employment guarantee, the CPI (M) General Secretary, Mr Prakash Karat, said, "We were disappointed with the draft Bill for Employment Guarantee, which is a diluted Bill. The Bill was sent to the standing committee, which we believe has made good suggestions."

Pointing out that the proposed law was an important step towards making the right to work a fundamental right, Mr Karat, "I hope the Bill will be passed in the next session of Parliament."
