The Hindu Business Line : Counselling scheme for students evokes good response

PRE-COUNSELLING guidance programme for students seeking admission to professional courses in the State, organised by The Hindu Education Plus in Mangalore on Friday, evoked a good response with more than 800 students and parents attending the session.

Inaugurating the programme, the Inspector-General of Police, Western Range, Mr H.N. Satyanarayana Rao, urged the students to assess their strengths and weaknesses before opting for any discipline.

He said that the selection of colleges does not matter much, if the student has the mettle to perform.

The Registrar of the National Institute of Technology Karnataka (NITK), Prof A.H. Sequera, who spoke on technical courses, said that every branch in engineering has its own importance.

He said that the factors affecting the selection of a subject include mental aptitude of the student and the job market for the subject. There should be a scope for self-development in the chosen discipline, he said.

Prof B.M. Hegde, former Vice-Chancellor of Manipal Academy of Higher Education, who spoke on medical courses, said that there is a good demand for Ayurvedic medicine practitioners abroad.

Prof M.N. Madhyastha of NITK said that biotechnology was gaining importance among engineering subjects.

Mr T. Ravi, Regional Manager of The Hindu, Mangalore, welcomed the gathering.

State Bank of India (SBI), Karnataka Bank, New Mangalore Port Trust and Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Ltd were the sponsors of the event.
