MR JUSTICE R.K. Abichandani, a former Judge of the Gujarat High Court, has taken charge as the President of the Customs, Excise and Service Tax Appellate Tribunal (CESTAT), a Revenue Department official confirmed.

The CESTAT was formerly known as the Customs, Excise and Gold (control) Appellate Tribunal (CEGAT), which was constituted on October 11, 1982. The CEGAT was renamed as CESTAT from May 14, 2003, the date on which the Finance Bill 2003 received the assent of the President of India.

All appeals against the orders and decisions passed by the commissioners of customs and excise under the Customs Act, 1962, Central Excise Act 1944 and the Finance Act 1994 (relating to Service Tax) are heard by the CESTAT.

The CESTAT is also empowered to hear the appeals against orders passed by the Designated Authority with regard to anti-dumping duties under the Customs Tariff Act, 1975.
