Trade, industry asked to register for service tax

Our Correspondent

Madurai , March 30

THE Tamil Nadu Chamber of Commerce and Industry (TNCC&I) has called upon trade and industrial organisations required to pay service tax on lorry freight charges to register themselves with the Service Tax Section in the Central Excise Department before March 31, the last date for submitting the registration form.

In a statement, the chamber president, Mr S. Rethinavelu, has drawn attention to the recent judgement of the Supreme Court in which it has upheld the Constitutional validity of the imposition of service tax by the Central Government on consignors/consignees bearing lorry freight charges.

He further pointed out that there is no registration fee and the registration process is simple.
