Rice Ryots to assess new rice tech Our Bureau
Hyderabad , Jan. 17 ABOUT 250 farmers from 12 districts in the State have been selected to assess the feasibility of the System of Rice Intensification technology. The initiative is being funded by the WWF International, using its farmers' participatory research. The SRI technology is expected to result in saving water and increasing rice yields, according to Dr A. Satyanarayan, Director of Extension, ANGRAU. Delivering the inaugural address at a workshop on Monday, organised by the Agricultural University and the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF), he said SRI technology utilises biological power to produce a healthy crop, robust tillering and massive root system. Explaining the farmers' initiative, he said the amount of water used for the SRI method would be recorded during this rabi season with the help of irrigation devices, and the data on water saving could be passed on for policy advocacy in the State. Experts from WWF International, ANGRAU, ICRISAT (International Crops Research Institute for Semi-Arid Tropics) and farmers participated in the workshop, according to an ANGRAU press release.
