`Engg colleges short of students; on verge of closure'

Mangalore , Dec. 2

SELECT engineering colleges facing shortage of students are on the verge of closure, according to Dr N.R. Shetty, Chairman of the All-India Council for Technical Education, South Western region, Bangalore.

Inaugurating a national conference on `Integration of strategies for effective quality management in technical education,' organised by the Nitte Mahalinga Adyanthaya Memorial Institute of Technology at Nitte in Udupi district on Thursday, he said the survival of these colleges would become easier, provided they take care to improve quality continuously.

Various people have expressed concern over the increase in the number of technical education institutions, as they feel that this would bring down the quality of education. "This is true to a certain extent," he said.

There is a need to improve the quality of teaching in the engineering institutions, and teachers should look at the "content beyond the syllabus," he said.

Dr S.Y. Kulkarni, Principal of the Nitte Mahalinga Adyanthaya Memorial Institute of Technology, presided over the function. Thirty-five research papers are being presented in the two-day seminar.
