Growing tamarind

This refers to the report `Tamarind prices may go up on demand' (Business Line, Dec 2). India may be the largest producer of tamarind but proper attention is not paid to its cultivation. These trees can withstand drought conditions and growing them doesn't require much labour.

Many new varieties of tamarind can be planted, which would be a reliable source of additional income for farmers. The government and our Agricultural Universities should take more interest in the growth and cultivation of tamarind.
