Apollo Tyres completes expansion

G.K. Nair

Kochi , Oct. 6

Apollo Tyres Ltd (ATL), which received the FACT M.K.K. Nayar Memorial Productivity award for 2002-03 on Tuesday, has completed the capacity expansion programme in its two plants in Kerala.

With this, the capacity of its main plant at Perambra in Thrissur district has gone up to 245 tonnes per day from 210 tonnes and the expansion involved an investment of Rs 30 crore. The capacity of Premier Tyres Ltd, a subsidiary of Apollo, has also been increased to 80 tonnes a day from 55 tonnes.

The Perambra unit has reached its optimum capacity and any further expansion would involve huge investment, as it would require installation of expensive equipment, industry sources told Business Line.

The Kerala factories of ATL manufacture bus and truck tyres and the company currently enjoys 25 per cent share of the market which is roughly over seven lakh tyres a month, they said.
