External powers in the neighbourhood New challenges to Indian diplomacy
The involvement of distant foreign powers in developments in India's neighbourhood is inevitable. While some effort, such as the ouster of the Taliban in Afghanistan, have served Indian interests well, not so others like the US/UK involvement in Paki stan and Myanmar. New Delhi will have to calibrate its diplomatic efforts with others in shaping events in the neighbourhood whenever feasible, but have the courage to go its own way when perceptions and approaches differ, says G. Parthasarathy.
