MSEB recovers Rs 520 crore from farmers

Our Bureau

Mumbai , April 5

THE Maharashtra State Electricity Board (MSEB) has recovered arrears of Rs 520 crore from farmers last month, one of the highest recoveries in recent years. This has increased the electricity board's recoveries for March to Rs 1,208 crore.

Although this is less than half the anticipated Rs 1,300 crore to be recovered from farmers, MSEB's new Chairman, Mr Jayant Kawale, called the response "fairly good". Farmers, or more precisely, consumers using agricultural pumps, owe MSEB close to Rs 1,000 crore as arrears and Rs 300 crore as last month's bill.

Farmers were offered the Krishi Sanjeevani scheme in January. It waived 50 per cent of the principal amount payable by pump users, entire interest on the principal and delay payment charges. Users were allowed to pay 50 per cent of the principal in instalments.

`Krishi Sanjeevani' launched to collect these arrears is part of sops announced by the State Government in this election year.
