Plan to develop Maharashtra as biotech destination

Our Bureau

Mumbai , Nov. 12

WITH plans to set up a biotech park in Pune and develop the Pune University into a Centre of Excellence, Maharashtra, has initiated a roadmap to emerge as the country's leading biotech destination.

While the Pune Biotech Park would be set up with investment drawn from the Maharashtra Biotech corpus fund of Rs 10 crore, the Centre of Excellence has roped in software giant, IBM, as its partner.

"We are utilising IBM for more than hardware. We expect this partnership to yield more research projects as well as fellowships for research," Dr Vishwas Dumal, Principal Secretary, Industries, Government of Maharashtra, told Business Line.

Outlining the Government's plan to develop Maharashtra as a biotech destination, Dr Dhumal said Mumbai and Pune would be positioned as biotech hubs with Mumbai being the axis for collaboration between various regions like Nagpur. Plans are also on to create a framework that would facilitate special economic areas for enabling various clusters like auto-ancillary, garments and agri-export zones, Dr Dhumal added.
