UNICEF, CoOptions Technologies Ltd and the Andhra Pradesh Government have jointly developed a unique information technology (IT) project `Sisu Samrakshak', that seeks to empower rural women and children.

It is designed to provide necessary information through kiosks to rural women so that new set of practices in the areas of nutrition, child development and safe motherhood are understood and practiced at the rural level. The State Chief Minister, Mr N. Chandrababu Naidu, launched this project on Wednesday.

The Chief Minister in a statement said Sisu Samrakshak would be an ideal tool in the hands of frontline workers such as Anganwadi workers and ANM's who provide specific services to expectant and new mothers.

Mr William Thompson of Unicef noted that the project had been a model for collaborative effort that included an array of different partners comprising the Department of Women's Development and Child Welfare, Department of Health and Family Welfare, Department of Information Technology, Unicef and technology partner CoOptions Technologies Ltd.

Sisusamrakshak, conceptualised and developed by Unicef in partnership with CoOptions, is a knowledge portal that provides key information and content pertaining to women's health during pregnancy, nutrition, child development, safe motherhood, immunisation, ideal hygiene practices, common illnesses and their remedies.

During field tests it was observed that the information provided by the solution could be useful to address the concerns and issues pertaining to a wide range of target audience such as married couples, pregnant women, lactating mothers, infants, pre-school kids and adolescents.

Content on Sisusamrakshak is delivered via audio narrative, pictures and video clips so that illiterate women can access, understand and apply the information. Apart from disseminating information, this also monitors the use and effectiveness through a network of reporting system established between district and state levels.

While handheld devices will be used to monitor health, information on child and family welfare will be shared and discussed within communities. It will also be collected, collated and distributed to concerned Government departments.
