NGOs blame rich nations for failure

G. Srinivasan

Cancun , Sept. 15

EVEN as the trade talks collapsed, NGOs immediately came out with a slew of statements blaming the rich world for its total lack of understanding of the dynamics of the evolving developing countries' clout within the WTO on issues dear to them.

ActionAid's international campaign head, Mr Adriano Campolina Soares, said: "If the WTO can do no better than this, developing countries will simply question why we need it at all." Oxfam's Mr Phil Bloomer said: "World trade negotiations will never be the same again. On paper, this meeting has failed but the new power of developing countries backed by campaigners around the world has made Cancun a turning point."

Friends of the Earth International hailed the developing countries for having stood their ground, despite intense pressure from the business lobbies and bullying by the EU and the US.
