Crumbling heritage

A. Roy Chowdhury

The Thousand Pillar Temple, a popular tourist spot on the Hanamkonda-Warangal Road, seems to be in trouble. A portion of the beautifully carved pillar temple crumbled recently. Star-shaped and triple-shrined, the temple was built in 1163 AD by King Rudra Deva in the style of Chalukyan temples. One thousand exquisitely carved pillars and a magnificent black basalt Nandi are the unique features of the temple, dedicated to Shiva, Vishnu and Surya.
