No excise labels on matchboxes

Our Bureau

KOCHI: Major match manufacturers in Tamil Nadu have announced that no Central Excise Labels will henceforth be put on matchboxes.

The decision is a sequel to the Excise Department's stoppage of the issue of Excise labels to match manufacturers in accordance with the provisions of the Union Budget.

A press release issued here said that the match manufacturing units were implementing the Central Government regulation with immediate effect. The match industry has also decided that no substitute, like a sticker or a slip, will replace the Central Excise stamp on the packaging.

About 24 billion matchboxes are annually made and sold in the country , generating a turnover of around Rs 1,250 crore. The industry employs a large number of people mainly women, the release added.
