World Seed Congress on June 7

BANGALORE: THE five-day World Seed Congress, which is being held here from June 7, will be inaugurated by the Union Agriculture Minister, Mr Rajnath Singh.

The congress will have its preliminary discussions before the inaugural of the meet. Dr M.S. Swaminathan, eminent agriculture scientist, will deliver the keynote address. The meet, which has attracted a large number of delegates will also be addressed by Dr Christopher Ahrens, President, the International Seed Federation, and Dr Bernard Le Buanec, Secretary-General of the International Seed Federation. The Chief Minister, Mr S.M. Krishna, will preside over the meet.

According to Mr R.B. Barwale, Convenor of the congress and Managing Director of Maharashtra Hybrid Seeds Company Ltd (Mahyco), the meet will have sessions on the contentious issues of genetically manipulated crops and the seeds patent regime.

Being held for the first time in Asia, the meet will provide an opportunity to the industry members to interact with the global seed companies and experts in the field.
