Ships need permission to enter UAE waters

Our Bureau

MUMBAI, May 12

INDIAN ships sailing to UAE ports will have to apply for permission 15 days in advance from the Government of the United Arab Emirates. The Directorate-General of Shipping has issued a notice to all Indian flagships to this effect.

This notice follows an advice from the UAE Government to the External Affairs Ministry.

As per the UAE advice, all ships entering UAE territorial waters should apply for permission 15 days in advance and, in case of emergency, 72 hours in advance. The applications should be made in a prescribed proforma. Vessels carrying aircraft should make a separate application for permission.

Shipping companies are not very clear about the reason for the UAE Government's notice. But they feel that this probably follows the situation in Iraq.
