`Cost data can resolve tariff tangle'

Our Bureau

NEW DELHI, May 12

TO resolve tariff tangle, cost data will come as a handy tool for the telecom industry. Expressing this view at a seminar organised by the Institute of Cost and Works Accountants of India (ICWAI) on `Cost Accounting Records (Telecommunications) Rules, 2002', on Saturday, the Secretary, Department of Company Affairs (DCA), Mr Vinod Dhall said, "once the authenticated cost data is available, the TRAI would be able to effectively and speedily handle the cutthroat competition and price war in the telecom industry."

The maintenance of Cost Accounting Records has been made statutory for the telecom industry under the Cost Accounting Records (Telecommunications) Rules, 2002, by the DCA.

Mr N Parthasarathy, Member (Finance), Telecom Commission and Secretary, Department of Telecommunication, expressed hope that the deliberations at the seminar will clarify the doubts and problems, which may be faced by different sectors of the industry in maintaining the Cost Accounting Records which have been made applicable to the industry.

The deliberations are expected to streamline the operations in particular relating to tariff fixation in telecom industry, which is currently obsessed with the problems of cut-throat competition, ICWAI said.
