Tata Steel may export thru Haldia

Our Bureau

KOLKATA, April 3

TATA Iron & Steel Company Ltd (Tata Steel) is thinking of exporting iron ore through Haldia dock. Senior officials of the company recently visited Haldia to examine the facilities to be available at the port.

According to Haldia dock sources, Tata Steel has indicated a throughput of one million tonnes annually to start with, to go up to five million tonnes eventually if the market so develops.

Haldia dock's mechanised iron ore plant currently has the capacity to handle about four million tonnes annually on two routes-two tipplers basis. Depending on the cargo inducement from the Tatas, the dock authorities, it is indicated, might even consider adding a third route to the plant, thereby augmenting the capacity to six million tonnes annually.

Meanwhile, Haldia dock ended the year 2002-03 with a total traffic of 28.55 million tonnes as compared to 25.02 million tonnes in 2001-02, thus posting a growth of about 14 per cent.

Item-wise break-ups show that the largest growth was recorded in iron ore shipments. The ore throughput at 2.7 million tonnes (1.77 million tonnes) showed a growth of more than 50 per cent. The corresponding figures for other items are: thermal coal 3.3 mt (2.9 mt) 15 per cent growth, coking coal 4.3 mt (3.9 mt) nine per cent, crude 7.7 mt ( 7.2 mt) more than six per cent and petroleum products 4.1 mt ( 3.8 mt) 5.3 per cent.

The container throughput at 1,17,000 TEUs (98,000 TEUs) posted a growth of over 19 per cent.
