KOLKATA, Nov. 13

A DECISION on the new tariff structure for basic telecom services will be taken by the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) by December this year.

An open house meeting towards this end was held here today and was presided by the Chairman of TRAI, Mr M.S. Verma. A cross-section of people, including representatives of basic telephone operators, attended the open house session.

The session discussed at length the evolving structure of the basic telecom services market and the competition that is likely to take place in the future. The changes in the basic tariffs that have taken place, including changes in the national long-distance and international long-distance segments, were also discussed.

Mr Verma said rapid technological advancements in the telecom sector had resulted in substantial improvement in the availability and accessibility of basic telephony, which had significantly helped raise tele-density in the country.
