COIMBATORE, Oct. 28

AN improved market for textile products has buoyed Lakshmi Mills Co Ltd's (LMC) sales income and profitability in the quarter ended September 30, 2002, enabling it to turn around.

The company's unaudited financial results for the quarter have showed its sales income going up by about 14 per cent at Rs 45.50 crore as against Rs 39.93 crore for the same period in 2001. It has posted a net profit of Rs 40.44 lakh as against a net loss of Rs 3.35 crore as on September 30, 2001.

LMC's other income by way of export incentives and income from investments during the quarter was marginally higher at Rs 53 lakh and Rs 94 lakh (compared to Rs 33 lakh and Rs 81 lakh respectively last year).

On the expenditure side, LMC's raw material consumption during the quarter had dropped to Rs 18.92 crore compared to last year's Rs 24.76 crore.

Thanks to the improved performance in Q2, total sales turnover for the half year ended September 30, 2002 was higher at Rs 84.35 crore against the Rs 78.54 crore sales realised during the corresponding period of 2001 fiscal. The net profit for the six-month period was Rs 68 lakh compared to Rs 2.87 crore net loss incurred last year.
