KOLKATA, Sept. 19

THE moribund railway network of the Kolkata Dock System (KDS) under the Kolkata Port Trust (KPT) is likely to come back to life following the decision of CESC Ltd, the private power generating and supplying company, to use it for stepping up coal throughput.

According to a MoU signed between CESC Ltd and KPT here, the port authorities will accord priority to the private power company for using the network more fully than at present for the purpose of coal movement. In turn, the power company will step up the throughput from the present three lakh tonnes to six lakh tonnes a year gradually. Also, the company will be responsible for the maintenance of the network at its own cost. The arrangement will come into force from November, according to a press release issued by KPT.

The MoU was signed by Mr M.A. Bhaskarachar, Deputy Chairman of KPT, in charge of KDS, and Mr P.K. Basu, Executive Director (Generation), CESC Ltd.
