BPL Mobile switching centre launched at Madurai

Our Correspondent

MADURAI: BPL Mobile Cellular has commissioned its second mobile switching centre (MSC), here at Madurai as part of its capacity expansion programme.

Mr R. Ram Shankar, Branch Manager talking to presspersons here said that the second MSC, that became operational a fortnight ago, has the capacity to accommodate 50,000 connections at present, and this could be upgraded to cater up to 3 lakh connections.

The calls made by the subscribers in Madurai and Tiruchi region will be routed through the Madurai switching centre, instead of Coimbatore. The MSC has been installed at a cost of Rs 20 crore.

Mr Ram Shankar also said the high speed circuit switched data of 14.4 kbps in the mobile switch, as against the present 9.6 kbps, will enable a faster download of transmission. Besides, the third generation `blue tooth technology' in it would enable the subscribers to send 2 MB motion pictures through their mobiles. The enhanced full rate switch (EFR) in the MSC will give more clarity of speech. BPL Mobile, with 1.40 lakh subscribers, has plans to extend its coverage to few more towns this year, in addition to the existing 65 towns, he added.
