Tea Tea exports dip 8 pc in June Our Bureau
CHENNAI, July 30 THE downward trend in domestic tea exports continued for the third month in succession with June exports dipping by eight per cent. Production also continued to fall with the first half output dipping by nearly five per cent. Tea exports in June were down to 13.01 million kg (mkg) compared to 14.13 mkg during the same period last year. Total exports between January and June was down by 3.2 per cent to 74.05 mkg (76.43 mkg), according to a Tea Board data. Tea exports during the first quarter of the fiscal fell 21 per cent to 29.93 mkg from 37.46 mkg during same period last fiscal. However, production in June witnessed a 3-mkg rise to 97 mkg. Total yield during the first half was down to 284.6 mkg (298.2 mkg). Tea production in the South showed marginal improvement with the June crop registering a 3.8 mkg rise at 20.9 mkg. North Indian output was down 0.8 mkg to 76.1 mkg in June. Tamil Nadu was responsible for the 3.8-mkg rise in production to 14.8 mkg (11.8 mkg) in the South. With the campaign for boosting orthodox output gaining ground, the output of the variety during June showed a 3.1 mkg rise to 12.3 mkg (9.2 mkg). The CTC output was steady at 84.1 mkg. Others were down by 0.1 mkg to 0.6 mkg (0.7 mkg).
