Taxation `Property tax plan not in present form' Our Bureau
MANGALORE, July 3 IN another twist to the controversy regarding the implementation of the self-assessment scheme for property tax in Mangalore City Corporation limits, the former Union Minister of State for Finance and current member of the Rajya Sabha, Mr B. Janardhana Poojary, has said that the scheme will certainly not be implemented here in its present form. According to Mr Poojary, the Chief Minister, Mr S.M. Krishna, and the new Minister for Urban Administration, Mr D.K. Shivakumar, had gone on record stating that the amendments suggested by the Mangalore City Corporation would be considered before a final notification is issued in this regard. In the run-up to the Mangalore City Corporation elections, Mr Poojary had strongly campaigned against the scheme and stated that the Congress, if voted to power in the local body, would ensure that the scheme would not be implemented in Mangalore. The nature of property-holding in and around Mangalore, according to Mr Poojary, would create several anomalies in the scheme if implemented in its present form.
